Barely two weeks after the release of season 2 of the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, most fans have binge-watched the season in its entirety and are rallying for more. Unlike other networks, Netflix releases the whole season at once, instead of making viewers wait and releasing only one episode a week, even skipping weeks for holidays. While it would be interesting to note the difference in viewers between this style of releasing series’ and the traditional method, Netflix also differs from other networks in that they do not release any viewership numbers.
Netflix versus Cable
Netflix seems to be quite a rebel when it comes to television, going for a wholly different approach that is not limited by time slots or advertising. The innovative new way to watch television puts the control squarely in the hands of the viewer, allowing viewers to choose when to watch the program, which program or movie to watch, and even allowing viewers to watch the whole series in a sitting if desired. Other networks will have to run to keep up, or up the ante on the programs offered.
Orange is the New Black Relatability
While viewer numbers can’t be used to form a comparison, it is clear that Orange is the New Black is being widely viewed. The second season has allowed us to view the characters in more vivid color, and see what brought them each to where they are. The show has taken a genius approach in expanding the depth of the characters that allows a wider audience to relate to each or all. Netflix is paving the way for future programming with their fantastic user-friendly system and now amazing original series.
