Lately it seems fast food has taken its reputation for heart-unhealthy food and decided to run with the ball. In the wake of the breakfast taco, KFC has decided to re-release the double-down the day after Easter. Originally released as a stunt food about four years ago, the double down is a concoction that boasts bacon and cheese between two fried chicken breast filets instead of bread.
High Demand for the Double Down
While the product never had high expectations and was released as a limited time promotion, the demand for the gluttonous mass of meat and cheese far exceeded expectations, with 10 million selling within the first month that it was offered. The original promotion was extended, and some stores opted to keep the double down on the menu.
With the re-release of the double down, the rest of the world will get to experience the glory of the meat-heavy meal. True to form, the promotion will only run for a little over a month, ending on May 25. A KFC representative said that if the promotion goes well, the item may continue to be available for an extended time, however.
While the Double Down seems like a frivolous calorie-fest, at 540 calories it is actually lighter than it may seem. A Tendercrisp chicken sandwich with bacon from Burger King is 780 calories and a Bacon Clubhouse Crispy chicken Sandwich from McDonalds is 750 calories. Who knew using chicken as bread actually saved calories? Would you enjoy a Double Down or scoff at the gluttony of such a menu item?
